AvX Vs is a mini series that focuses specifically on the fights between the groups rather than the actual story line. Not to be confused with the AvX story arc.
That being said, I wasn’t pleased with this first issue as a whole.
Negatives:
1. Some of the writing was just so bad. I get that these series is just specifically for the fights and nothing else (the comic even tells you so in the beginning) but Ironman talking about going up to Jupiter with some ladies for a one night stand? Come on, now.
2. I fail to see exactly where Namor vs Thing fits into the continuity of things. Shouldn’t Luke Cage have jumped in at some point there? It felt awkward and off.
3. I feel that the writing was so bad it deserves 2 mentions. I get that Magneto is a Jewish survivor of a death camp in WW2, and at first, I kinda liked him drawing a line between the Avengers and the Nazis, asking Ironman if his excuse after all this is over is that he was “just following orders” too. It caused me to think about the Avengers actions and I guess so a degree, I could understand why he feels the way that he does as he says that, since this could very well be a life or death situation for the mutant species.
I did not like the second time they had him relate something to the Holocaust. I don’t want to spoil why he would say that (hint: it wasn’t in reference to the Avengers this time) but I personally feel that it undermines the event the continue to reference it freely and it cheapens the character to only be concerned with that dimension of him.
Positives:
1. I enjoyed the explanation as to why Ironman wasn’t instantly beaten by Magneto. Tony is a resourceful man who made his suit “in a caves with scraps”. As Tony says himself in the comic, if you expected this to be a no-contest win for Magneto, “than you obviously never met Tony Stark”.
yeah that is pretty much all I liked. I certainly hope this little side project picks up in the future though.
Don’t feel bad if you choose to skip this issue. It is the right choice.
